Our Team

Gary Smith’s passion for woodworking began as a young man, building boats on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Training with respected craftsmen on traditional Bay-built boats not only taught him the fine art of craftsmanship, but patience and attentiveness—all skills that have been invaluable in his career.

In 1988, while studying architecture, Gary was inspired to combine his background in fine woodworking with construction. He began his own company, Gary Smith Builders, to remodel and build beautiful, architect-designed homes. His vision was clear: he would build homes that were more than just four walls and a roof—they would be artwork, inside and out.

Today, the legacy of fine woodworking continues in the next generation, as Gary’s son Brad has joined the company. Together, father and son create a perfect harmony, balancing new technology and management practices with tried-and-true building techniques and overall, a deep commitment to craftsmanship.

Gary Smith, Founder & Owner

Since 1988, I’ve been proud to serve our clients with attention to detail, impeccable craftsmanship, and superior customer service.

With hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, great recessions, and a pandemic, our homes, offices, and clients have been through a lot in the past years—but we’ve stepped back and learned from each hurdle.  The most rewarding aspect of my work is to head down the road to visit a project we built 5, 10, sometimes 30 years ago, pulling in the driveway and visiting with the owners we built it for. We are committed to creating homes that can be handed down, generation to generation, built to encompass the best aspects of Chesapeake life.

Along with my wife, Lisa,  who has been my side partner in the business since day one, I feel blessed to have a person that is just as passionate about building as I am working alongside me: my son, Brad Smith.

Brad Smith, Project Manager

Brad graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelors of Science in building construction. After college, he joined a national commercial construction company where he had the opportunity to be involved in large scale commercial projects including the construction of athletic buildings at Salisbury University.

In 2017, Brad decided to switch gears, bringing his project management expertise, to join his father, Gary, as Project Manager at Gary Smith Builders, Inc.

Brad’s passion for construction began early on, spending his summers assisting with labor on various job sites at GSB and could always be found spending his free time in his grandfather’s workshop.

Outside of work, Brad enjoys spending his time on the water or in the mountains. He currently lives in Easton with his wife, Kelsey and dog, Beau.
